JByrd Nurseries LLC was established in 2013 by  Paul Richards, who brings a diverse and extensive background in the green industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design from the University of Maryland and previously owned and operated a successful design/build landscape business for over 15 years. This hands-on experience gives him valuable insight into the challenges landscape contractors, architects, and designers face today.

Since 2006, Paul has built a strong reputation in nursery consulting—known for his commitment to customer service and his ability to specify and supply plant material and hardgoods that align with each customer’s unique needs and budget requirements.

Customers often ask Paul, “Why JByrd?” The answer is simple: the company is named in honor of his father, Jack Elias Byrd Richards. “Byrd” is a family surname Paul always wanted to use in his business. Jack was born in a small town in Georgia and went on to serve with the FBI in Washington, DC. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corps and eventually built a long career as an electrical engineer with NASA’s Earth Sciences Division at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Jack instilled the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity in everything he did. He retired from NASA in 2017 after 57 years of service—and continues to consult with them today. Paul has always admired his father’s dedication and work ethic. Those same values are the foundation of JByrd Nurseries and remain at the heart of everything the company does.
